Based in Amager Copenhagen, The Huhahu Male Voice Choir have been regular collaborators with Livingstones Kabinet since 2001. During that time they have aroused great interest among ethnomusicologists as Scandinavia’s sole exponents of the art of “huhahu” shepherd calling. Since the viking conquests, the sheep herders on Scotland’s northern coast, the area now known as Caithness, have practiced a unique form of vocalisation. Using only the syllables “Hu”, “Ha” and their compounds “Hu-ha” and “Ha-hu”, they have developed a rhythmic calling technique to give instructions to sheepdogs over distances. The connections between this and “yoiking” among the Samic people of Northern Scandinavia need hardly be emphasized. Now The Huhahu Male Voice Choir have begun to integrate this ancient art into the thoroughly contemporary kabaret world of Livingstone’s Kabinet music. The result is a very special meeting of cultures; emotionally moving, stimulating and thought-provoking.
